Packing for your honeymoon is an exciting but daunting task, and choosing the right luggage is a important part of the process. While you may be tempted to pack your entire wardrobe, it’s important to be practical and choose a luggage size that meets your needs without being too bulky or cumbersome.
Consider the length of your trip, the destinations you will be visiting, and the transportation options you will be using. If you plan to travel light and rely on public transportation, opt for a small to medium-sized suitcase that is easy to maneuver on all surface types (remember those cobblestones?). I brought my Monos Carry-On Plus for one week in southern France, and it was the perfect size for everything I needed! I have two other Monos sizes, but each one was too small or too large for this particular trip where I needed to pack a few different types of shoes for comfort.
If you plan to rent a car and have more space flexibility, a larger suitcase may be suitable. Don’t forget the packing cubes though to maximize that large suitcase’s space! I recommend getting Monos’ compressible packing cubes as they’re especially great for keeping your undergarments, pajamas, and swimwear items together. These travel must-haves will keep everything well organized if you need to pull something out at the airport or on the road.
Invest in high-quality luggage that is durable, lightweight, and has features that will make your style of packing and traveling more convenient. Details such as multiple compartments, zipper pouches, compression features, and smooth-rolling multi-directional wheels are always on the top of my list. Additionally, consider choosing a luggage color or design that stands out from others to make it easy to identify and avoid confusion at baggage claim.
Remember the right luggage can make all the difference in the ease and enjoyment of your honeymoon. Take the time to choose the right size, features, and design to fit your travel style and needs.

Summer Clothing Essentials for Europe
One of the most important things to consider when packing for your European summer honeymoon is the climate. Europe’s weather can be unpredictable depending on where you’re going, so you need to pack smartly and bring versatile pieces that can be layered easily or provide the best sun protection in those balmier regions. Here are some summer clothing essentials that you should consider bringing along:
1. Lightweight clothing: If you’re going to Europe during the summer months, pack plenty of lightweight tops, dresses, skirts, and/or shorts. Look for breathable fabrics like cotton or linen that will keep you cool in the hot weather. Remember Europe isn’t as air-conditioned like the U.S. is, so you may find yourself a bit warm when dining or sleeping depending on your chosen destination.
2. Jeans and light jackets: Even in the summer months, it can get chilly at night. So, it’s always a good idea to pack a couple of pairs of jeans and pants that you can swap out when going out to eat at your new favorite café or restaurant.
4. Scarves and hats: Thin, lightweight scarves and hats are great accessories that can help keep you cool and sun-protected while also adding a pop of color to your outfits. Bring a couple of different options so you can mix and match with your outfits. This also will help you pack less as you can reuse your wardrobe into fresh new looks!
5. Comfortable walking shoes: Europe is known for its beautiful walkable cities and towns, so you’ll need a comfortable pair of walking shoes that can take you from one place to another. Moisture-wicking sneakers (and socks), walking sandals, or comfortable flats are all great options. Know your feet and what will help them not ache or blister at the end of the day! Or if you’re a poor unfortunate sole like me, bring lots of Compeed blister plasters because you’ll need them no matter what kind of shoe you wear. It’s the only blister brand I’ll use and swear by.
When it comes to packing for your European honeymoon, less is more. Focus on versatile pieces that you can mix and match with your outfits, and don’t forget to leave room in your luggage for souvenirs like flowy dresses or fun t-shirts if those are your thing!
Dressy Outfits for Romantic Evenings
Oh la la! One of the best parts of a European honeymoon is enjoying romantic evenings with your partner. From dining at colorful bistros in Barcelona to strolling around historic fountains in Rome, it’s important to pack a few dressy outfits for these special occasions. Here are a few tips to help you choose the perfect pieces that are also suitcase-friendly:
Consider the dress code. While Europe is generally relaxed when it comes to dress codes (with that style we oh so love!), certain restaurants and bars may have specific requirements. Research the places you plan on visiting and pack accordingly. You’ll see signs for “no tracksuits” or “no sneakers” in the higher end places while some may just ask “no tank tops or flipflops” in more casual fine dining.
Opt for classic pieces. A little black dress or a tailored linen blazer is always a good summer evening option. These classic pieces are versatile and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.
Pack a statement piece. If you want to add a pop of color or sparkle to your outfit, consider packing a statement piece of jewelry or a fun accessory like a clutch or scarf. For a quick day to night look, it can elevate even the simplest of outfits.
Don’t forget about outerwear. Even in the summer months, it can get chilly in the evenings, especially if you’re near the water. Pack a light jacket or pashmina wrap to keep you warm and stylish.
Some examples of dressy outfits to pack for your European honeymoon might include a floral maxi dress paired with strappy sandals, a white jumpsuit with wedges, or a high-waisted midi skirt with a silk camisole and statement earrings. Remember the key is to choose pieces that make you feel confident and comfortable so that you can focus on joie de vivre with your sweetie.
Beach Essentials and Swimwear for European Island Getaways
Are you headed to some European islands or coastal towns during your honeymoon? Whether you’re heading to the stunning beaches of Greece, rooftop pools in Madrid, or the verdant shores of Madeira, you’ll need to make sure you pack the right beachwear and swimwear.
It’s important to know that many European beaches are topless, nude-friendly, or have a different perspective on modesty than Americans. If this makes you uncomfortable, make sure to research your destination ahead of time and pack accordingly. In terms of style, European beaches tend to be more fashion-forward, so if it’s important to you, consider investing in some high-quality, trendy swimwear. You may also want to pack a few different swimsuits to suit different moods and occasions. For instance, a one-piece swimsuit can be more practical for water activities like jet skiing or paddleboarding while a bikini might be more comfortable for sunbathing.
When it comes to cover-ups for sun protection or comfort, breezy kaftans and sarongs are versatile options that can be worn both on and off the beach. They’re also lightweight and easy to pack, making them ideal for any European island experience.
And of course, don’t forget to pack some sunscreen, sunglasses, and a sunhat (with its own hat clip to hang off of your bag!) to protect your skin from the strong European UV rays. You’ll also want to bring a packable beach bag to carry your essentials, like a book, snacks, and water. With the right beachwear and swimwear, you’ll be all set to explore Europe’s stunning islands!

Toiletries and Medications to Pack
When packing for a European honeymoon, it’s obviously very important to bring along toiletries and medications to ensure you stay healthy and comfortable throughout your trip. Here’s a list of items I always bring when going abroad to Europe:
1. Prescription Medications – Make sure you have enough medication for the entire duration of your trip. Additionally, keep a copy of your prescription with you in case you need to refill it while you’re abroad. Though European pharmacies will not fill actual American prescriptions, it will help you communicate what you need and how to get it (like an emergency asthma inhaler I once needed in Vienna!).
2. Painkillers – From headaches to sore feet, you never know when you’ll need a little pain relief. The name brands you’re familiar with at home may or may not be the same where you are going. For example, you won’t find
Acetaminophen (Tylenol), but its European equivalent is paracetamol.
3. Motion Sickness Medication – If you’re planning to take any boat rides or scenic drives through winding roads, motion sickness medication can be a lifesaver. Italian road trip through the Amalfi Coast, anyone?
4. Sunscreen – Protect your skin from harmful UV rays, especially if you plan to spend time outdoors. If you have a favorite brand, grab it before your trip! Though European sunscreens are chef’s kiss as they have different (and dare I say) better sun protection formulas than the United States.
5. Insect Repellent – Depending on where you’re headed, mosquitoes and other bugs can be a nuisance. Eat the buffet, don’t be the buffet.
6. Hand Sanitizer – Even in a post-pandemic travel world, this has always been a must-have for me. Keep your hands clean and germ-free, especially when you’re on the go. If you are minimizing your carry-on liquids, hand sanitizing wipes are great.
7. First Aid Kit – While your hotel is likely to have its own first aid kits, it’s always a good idea to keep at least Bandaids and a small nail file in your bag. I also always love a Pinch Provisions pouch for mini emergencies like stain removals and mending supplies.
8. Toiletries – This goes without saying, but don’t forget your toothbrush, toothpaste, and other essential toiletries! Thankfully your hotel may have these available, so that may be part of your packing strategy, but whichever route you go, make sure to pack your toiletry essentials.
When packing medications, always pack them in your carry-on luggage to ensure they’re easily accessible during your travels and in case your suitcase is lost. Additionally, be sure to check the local regulations for carrying medication and toiletries in your destination country, as rules and regulations may vary from what you’re used to at home (e.g., if you’re diabetic and have insulin needles). By being prepared and packing these essential items, you’ll be able to fully enjoy your European honeymoon without any health concerns holding you back.
Adapters and Electronics for European Power Outlets
When traveling to Europe, one important thing to consider is the different types of power outlets they have. Most countries in Europe use the Type C outlets which have two round prongs. Therefore you need to ensure that all your electronics can be charged with these types of outlets, or you will need an adapter. Many European hotels and other tourism and hospitality locations also have the more convenient USB outlets, especially for universal phone charging. But here are some essential things to keep in mind before your adventure on the other side of the Atlantic:
Check your electronics. Before you leave for your honeymoon, make a list of all the electronic devices that you will bring along with you. Double-check that all of them can be charged using the European power outlets. If you have any doubts, it is best to check with the manufacturer or a reputable electronics retailer.
Bring adequate adapters. Once you’ve identified the electronic devices that you will be bringing along, you will need to purchase the right adapters to use them with the European outlets if needed. It is best to bring multiple adapters in case you need to charge several devices simultaneously. You can purchase adapters from your local electronics store or online. I especially recommend the travel adapters that also have a USB socket so you can multi-task.
Keep voltage in mind. It is essential to note that the voltage in Europe is different from that in the United States. European outlets have a voltage of 220-240 volts, whereas American outlets have a voltage of 110-120 volts. If you plug in a device that is not compatible with the voltage, it may get damaged. However, most modern electronic devices like iPhones have built-in voltage converters, so this should not be an issue. This voltage problem is usually an issue with hair dryers and hair straighteners. Leave these at home if you can!
Consider getting a power bank for on-the-go. When traveling from place to place, it may just be more convenient to get a portable charging power bank, especially when flying. You never know if your hotel room’s outlet is ill-fitted across the room or just isn’t accessible. I never leave home without mine when traveling abroad!
Miscellaneous Summer-Ready Items to Bring Along
Aside from the obvious items like clothes, shoes, and toiletries, there are a few miscellaneous items you should consider packing for your European honeymoon. These small but useful items can make a big difference in your comfort and convenience during your trip.
Firstly, consider bringing a reusable water bottle. In Europe, many cities and airports have public drinking fountains or water stations where you can fill up your bottle for free. Having a water bottle on hand also means you won’t have to constantly purchase plastic bottles and can reduce your environmental impact.
And if you’re a hot sleeper or generally get warm easily, another must-have item is a small handheld electric fan. Like in our photo, this is one I took with me to southwestern France where air conditioning was not available in my château accommodations. I could bend it so it laid flat and angled on my face while I slept. It was perfect to help me get to sleep at night and was a great last minute Amazon purchase when I panicked over the hot weather forecast!
Lastly, don’t forget to pack a few foldable reusable bags or totes. In some European countries like France, Germany, Italy, Iceland, and Albania, plastic bags have been banned completely, and in the others, you have to pay per bag if you want one for your convenience. Bringing your own reusable bags can be helpful for carrying souvenirs or groceries and can save you money from having to constantly purchase plastic bags. Plus, they fold up easily and don’t take up much space in your luggage or purse!
Overall, while these items may seem small, they can greatly improve your travel during your European honeymoon with your new spouse!
