Review: Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream

Review: Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream

Many people are surprised that my first encounter with Elemis isn’t at their store, or through some viral video, or an influencer on social media. My first encounter with the brand was back in 2009! Yep, they have been around a long time here in Malaysia, and I bet many of you didn’t realise that! 😀

Back in 2009, when this blog was in its infancy, I sat down with the then distributors and they shared with me about this new brand that was coming into Malaysia, and let me try some of the iconic products. One such sample was the Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream.

A few years later, I purchased the full sized version, but I never got around to talking about it, because by then, the brand had gone into hibernation LOL But now that they’re back, under new management, I’d tell you about it.

I haven’t been in contact with the brand for a long time now, so I don’t know what sort of promotions or newness is around. When it comes to Elemis, there are just 2 products that I swear by – the Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm, and this Pro-Collagen Marine Cream. Everything else, to me, is gloss – make me change my mind 😛

Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream

The Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream is cited as the cream that started it all for the brand. It is formulated to be an anti-aging cream that promises to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles in just 2 weeks – don’t they all? LOL!

The key ingredients are Padina Pavonica, Chlorella and Ginkgo Biloba, where the first 2 are types of algae, hence the name ‘marine’ cream, as they’re sourced from the sea. These ingredients improve firmness of skin and deliver instant hydration. When skin is hydrated, it is more plumped, and lines appear less obvious.

In the world of skincare today, which is filled with products that are highly targeted, with buzzwords like retinol and peptides etc, you may wonder if a cream like the Pro-Collagen Marine Cream does anything.

Incidentally, it does.

Very lightweight gel-cream texture

The first thing to note is that the texture is very lightweight. It has a gel-cream texture, that I have sort of outgrown. Yet, in this instance, it works for me.

I use it primarily in the day due to the light texture on my dry skin. It sinks in my skin and makes it feel very supple and comfortable. You may argue that any moisturiser will – it’s what moisturisers do after all! And I’d agree. This is a moisturiser with a lovely texture and most people will find comfortable.

I have used it at night as well, and for my dry skin, I find that it works, but only just. I cannot use it for regular nightly use as it will not be sufficient. I do use it on the odd evening, when I have applied a facial oil as a barrier, so all I need is a light layer of moisturiser over it. Even then, it only just does the job.

As a day cream however, it is absolutely lovely.

It is interesting that back in 2009 (15 years ago), I mentioned that the texture felt a little thick, and I was being an amateur and doing the 5-dot technique of applying moisturiser on my skin. 15 years later, I note that the texture is light, and I’m doing a generous 13-dot technique (that you should be doing too for best results!)!

Skin does feel more supple and hydrated

I love the way my skin feels after using the Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream after about 2 weeks. Unless your skin is extremely neglected, you will not notice any immediate difference. In my case, I was using up a different cream prior, so my skin was not experiencing any extreme neglect.

That said however, after about 2 weeks of use, I did notice that my skin felt more supple, and hydrated. This more so in the day time, when our skin is more prone to water loss. I had some random breakouts around my cheek which I attributed to patches of dry skin, and everything cleared up and has remained clear since.

Again, it is worth noting that 15 years ago, I experienced similar results to my skin. I noticed then, as I do now, that my skin was more supple, and any dry patches was quickly cleared up, and my skin was well hydrated. This is testament to the longevity of the product – one that just works well over the years.

Worth the money?

The downside is that the Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream does come in at quite a hefty price tag. It isn’t my place to tell you if it’s worth the money however, as that depends on how much you have and are willing to spend.

On my part, I will say that if you are thinking of spending this much money on a cream anyway, you could really do worse, and if that was your budget, I’d get this Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream (because that’s what I’d do!). If this is out of your budget, I wouldn’t give up on it entirely.

Elemis does have trial sets that are more affordable, that you can try this cream, if you like, to see if it is worth the money for you. On a personal basis, I might consider this cream a little splurge – I’d buy it perhaps once a year, and use something more affordable the rest of the time.

I wish I could tell you it’s just hype, but it isn’t. To me there are just 2 items from Elemis that I’d recommend – this cream and the Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm. I haven’t found anything else to be terribly impressive – but feel free to change my mind 😛

The Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream is a lightweight gel-cream textured cream that you can use day and night, or for those with dry skin, for the day. I find that it sinks in easily into the skin and plumps it up nicely. Used over about 2 weeks, you may notice, as I did, that my skin looked more hydrated and more refined, and it felt more plumped. When skin is more plumped, lines will look more reduced, hence it is important to keep dry, lined skin well hydrated. This cream does a good job at that.

Lightweight texture is very comfortable
Skin is plumped and supple with regular use
Skin feels hydrated and lines appear reduced
Gives skin a healthy glow

Doesn’t do much else besides hydrating the skin

Have you tried this Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream? Anything else aside from this and the cleansing cream that you are convinced I should try?

I have tried a few items over the years, but nothing to shout about nor anything that left a lasting impression. I do like the brand as it is – it’s decent, albeit very expensive especially now that we have so many other options available in the market. Still, if you are shopping within this price range you really could do worse, and if so, this is the one for you to try! 🙂
