The 2022 World Series continues with Game 2 at Minute Maid Park on Saturday, after a riveting Game 1 that saw the host Astros suffer their first postseason loss of the year
They did so in unexpected fashion. Justin Verlander was perfect through the first three innings and the Astros jumped out to a 5-0 lead. As they’ve done all playoffs, however, the Phillies fought back and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with a home run by J.T. Realmuto in the top of the 10th inning.
The Phillies now have Zack Wheeler on the bump for Game 2. In four starts this postseason, Wheeler has a 1.78 ERA and the Phillies are 3-1 in those starts (Wheeler himself is 1-1).
Framber Valdez will be on the mound for the Astros. Houston is 2-0 in his postseason starts and the left-hander’s playoffs ERA is 1.42.
The Phillies will, no doubt, look to jump on Valdez quicker in Game 2 than they got to Verlander in Game 1. The Astros were held scoreless for the final seven inning Friday. They’ll look to capitalize on their opportunities more often.
The Astros are suddenly in a high-leverage game. They’re trying to avoid going down 0-2 in the series before it heads back to Philadelphia for Games 3, 4 and (if necessary) 5. A split would favor them at this point, but they’re playing a never-say-die Phillies team that is playing like it has house money.

Phillies vs. Astros live updates, highlights from 2022 World Series
8:23 p.m. — It CONTINUES for the Astros! Now Yordan Alvarez doubles off the short wall in left field, driving Peña in to make it 2-0 Houston. Just a ridiculous start for this Astros team off one of the NL’s best pitchers.
8:20 p.m. — Altuve connects on Wheeler with a double into left field to open the game, and Peña immediately steps up with a runner in scoring position. Peña jumps on the first pitch from Wheeler to double into left as well, and the Astros jump out to a 1-0 lead. Tremendous 1-2 punch from the Astros’ middle infielders.
Two pitches, two hits, one run.

8:17 p.m. — Valdez gets ahead of Harper 1-2 as well and gets him to fly out to left field for the third out of the inning. A slow, methodical inning — Valdez’s calling card. It’ll be Altuve-Peña-Alvarez for Wheeler in the home half of the inning.
8:13 p.m. — It took some doing, but Valdez finally gets Realmuto swinging on a bender in a 2-2 count. Bryce Harper now steps up to the plate to a chorus of boos from the Houston faithful. Two outs, Hoskins on first.
8:10 p.m. — After starting 1-2, Rhys Hoskins worked the count full against Valdez. The payoff pitch misses inside, and the Phillies have a first-inning base runner with Game 1 hero JT Realmuto stepping up.
8:08 p.m. — Valdez gets into a 3-1 hitters count on the first batter, but he gets Schwarber to ground up the middle into the shift for the first out of the inning.
8:07 p.m. — Kyle Schwarber steps up to the plate against Valdez and takes a fastball on the corner for strike one.
7:58 p.m. — Ken Rosenthal reports Rob Thomson wants to keep Zack Wheeler between 80 and 90 pitches. Watch out for that to see if the Astros are able to work the count against the Phillies ace.
7:50 p.m. — Country music group Little Big Town comes out for the national anthem in Game 2.
7:46 p.m. — David Ortiz busts out a Hakeem the Dream jersey in picking the Astros for Game 2, and all three Fox analysts like the Astros to even it up. We’ll see if that comes to pass.
7:45 p.m. — With first pitch approaching, both of these pitchers have put up some outstanding postseason numbers. Framber Valdez has started twice for Houston and has a WHIP of just 0.51. Zack Wheeler has started four times for the Phillies and they’ve won three of those four. It’s easy to argue he’s the true ace of this staff, so starting him with a 1-0 lead is a luxury for Philadelphia.
6:30 p.m. — And the Astros’ lineup with Valdez starting.
