It’s all about the mismatch — That’s Not My Age

Winter is the time when I reach Peak Wardrobe Happiness. All those lovely fabrics to layer up: cashmere, tweed, velvet, wool, corduroy. Mixing and mismatching is the way to go with different textures. The relaxed fit, tweed blazer from Boden works a treat over the fluffy mohair tank top from Brora, worn with Uniqlo’s HeatTech extra warm cotton thermal top and the shell pink, jumbo cords, also from Brora. The gorgeous leather shoulder bag is the ‘Daphne’ from Mimi Berry. Note the colours in the jacket and the tank top tally up with the pink wide-leg trousers and the long-sleeve green T-shirt. And let’s hear it for corduroy! This beautiful fabric feels like velvet but is much more durable. Practical and luxurious; what’s not to like?

Denim is another sturdy fabric that’s great for a spot of textural mismatching. Classic cotton indigo jeans sit nicely with a cashmere sweater or slinky silk blouse (or both), then pop a soft leather jacket on to complete the look. Lately, I’ve been wearing my silver leather jeans, a lot. At an event last week, I paired them with an organic cotton Breton top and a very old, slouchy velvet sweatshirt in midnight blue. For more relaxed occasions, try fancy pants with an oversized, cashmere roll neck and ankle boots. Experiment by varying the texture of each layer, this gentle juxtaposition is delightfully refreshing and so much more interesting than matchy-matchy.
