21 Simple Essential Oil Diffuser Blends

By Alison Angold | Qualified Aromatherapist | CIDESCO ITEC

A diffuser or a burner is an ideal way to use and benefit from essential oils. The oils will fill your space with wonderful aromas and allow you to inhale the therapeutic properties. Studies have shown that the aromas of the oils can have a positive effect when inhaled through the nose and the olfactory system.

Why use a diffuser?

A diffuser allows you to use different essential oil combinations to emit wonderful fragrances. They are easy to use and come in a variety of different forms and shapes. Generally speaking, they are safe and easy to use.

How to use a diffuser

Each diffuser will come with its own instructions so these must be followed. However, in general, you will use 5-10 drops of each oil, along with the recommended amount of water. There are some exceptions to this;

  • If you have young children or pets around, then reduce the number of oils used – 5 drops of each oil
  • If you suffer from respiratory issues, then reduce the number of drops of stronger oils; peppermint, ylang ylang, eucalyptus
  • Judge your space – for a small room/space, then reduce the number of drops, for a larger room, increase them

You can’t really go wrong with using the oils in a diffuser. If you don’t like a combination, then cross it off the list and don’t use it again.

Can I use a burner instead of a diffuser?

Yes, absolutely! In fact, I love a burner, as I always feel you get a purer aroma from the oils, as they are gently warmed by the heat from the candle. Again a range of burners are available to suit your home, and you simply add your oils to the burner in a small amount of water and light a tea light beneath it. Just remember not to leave the candle burning if you leave the room or the house. There are also other ways of burning oils without a diffuser such as a candle ring, radiator, or aroma-stone.

what are essential oils?

Essential oils are the pure oils that are extracted from flowers, fruit, herbs, and trees. Each oil has its own chemical composition which gives it its own therapeutic actions. When applied topically the oils penetrate through the skin and are absorbed into the bloodstream, where they travel around the body to have the desired effect.

When inhaled – from your diffuser blends – the molecules from the essential oils, travel up the nose and via the olfactory system, and have an effect on the brain and the nervous system, to have the desired effects.
