Moody Burnt Orange + Greenery Farm Wedding with Pampas Grass

Burnt orange and greenery farm wedding

JT and Gerda’s moody burnt orange and greenery farm wedding was an eclectic delight! We’re talking a circular pampas grass wedding arch, bohemian rugs, a moody cascading bouquet, a masterpiece wedding dress from Janita Toerien  and farm style family tables with mix and match decor. Plus, this South African wedding was hand made by the couple and their families, who pretty much did everything themselves. Seriously, can we say just say GOALS?

The couple’s outdoor farm wedding reception was filled with flowers and decor in hints of purple, burnt orange, peach, maroon and green. “We did EVERYTHING ourselves, designing as we went,” says Gerda, an interior architect herself. “We had friends and family help. My dad built the bar, and the tables, for example, and my mom made cushions. JT’s mom helped with bridesmaids gowns. My sister and her friend created our bouquets. Everyone had a role to play.”

Love Story: We have been together for 10 years. We met at JT’s matric dance and shortly after we went on holiday together with mutual friends. It was a holiday filled with that ‘butterfly-in-your-stomach’ kind of excitement. We were engaged at my parents farm where JT surprised me with a photoshoot! He went down on one knee while the sun was setting in the background. Magic!”

I wore a Janita Toerien wedding dress which took my breath away the first time I put it on. I was so much fun, because I felt like I designed it myself. I put three different wedding separates together which were a perfect representation of my own unique quirky style. I loved every second of that process. My hair and make up was kept simple, I did not want lots of curls. My makeup I did myself. I enjoyed the preparation of buying and doing my own makeup trial. On the day it was the most calming experience – almost a ritual, doing my own makeup. I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

I wanted an effortless look for our bridesmaids. We bought linen dresses from Jane Sews and leather block heal shoes from Poetry. They each then added a bright coloured tassel earring to complete their look. Their bouquets were made up of cream, orange and purple flowers with some eucalyptus leaves.

We only decided the day before what we wanted to do with my wedding bouquet. We just played around with the flowers we had. I wanted a lot of flowers, with less greenery. My amazing sister and her best friend did the most incredible job of creating an exquisite bouquet. We had pepper tree leaves (which we picked ourselves from my sisters garden) with orchids, tuber roses, carnations, anemone and ranunculus.

JT wore a tailor made black linen suit with a crisp white shirt and thin silky black tie. The linen was something quite unique. Simple and elegant. The groomsmen were also simply dressed in black pants with plain white shirts. We had made minimalist boutonnières with ribbon all the way from Switzerland (which a friend brought).

A half an hour befor the ceremony it started raining. We got married in the rain. It was so special and lent a very unique and nostalgic vibe to our wedding.

We had our outdoor wedding ceremony in a old “kraal” near my parents house. It had been overgrown with beautiful grass and ferns. We made a stunning pampas grass wreath and stood upon one of my dads red Persian carpets.

Our wedding reception was quite simple and somewhat eclectic. We used a white tent which was pitched on beautiful green grass. The furniture was made by my dad from old pallets. He built the bar also. It looked amazing.

We collected amber glass bottles, which we mixed with my mom and sisters delft vases. We foraged pink fluffy grass from the roadside the afternoon before and just had a lot of fun with making up the flowers. Each arrangement was unique, as we were inspired by the different colours and flower combinations.

I made signs with quirky sayings, custom designed a logo and made a beautiful hanging poster which we hung from one of the trees. We also had built a small bar which acted as a gin station for everyone to help themselves. It set a very relaxed and sociable atmosphere.
