The inaugural CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup 2024 is promising women’s soccer at its best.
From 20 February to 10 March, the top eight women’s football nations from the CONCACAF region will be joined by four guest teams from the CONMEBOL region. The twelve sides will then battle it out across four cities in the United States to be crowned champions.
The sides have been split into three groups of four, and will compete in a single round-robin style group stage. The top two teams from each group will then progress to the knockout stage, and will be joined by the two-best third-placed teams from the group stage.
The maiden edition of the tournament features USWNT, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Panama, El Salvador, Mexico and Costa Rica as well as the four CONMEBOL guest nations, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Paraguay.
Hosts USWNT qualified for the tournament when they won the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship in July 2022. Canada then qualified as the CONCACAF Olympic play-off winners in September 2023. Mexico, Panama and Costa Rica were winners of their respective Gold Cup qualification groups in December 2023, whilst Puerto Rico, El Salvador and Dominican Republic each won their qualification play-offs earlier this month.
As for the CONMEBOL guest nations, Brazil gained qualification as 2022 Copa America Femenina winners whilst Colombia, Argentina and Paraguay did so by finishing as runners-up, third and fourth respectively at that same competition.
