Ready for a true childhood throwback craft? How about some DIY wish bracelets?

These fun and earthy bracelets were a favorite of mine as a kid and are SO easy. Hemp was big in the 90s but is always a popular choice. Of course, you can try switching it up, because the basic framework of this tutorial serves as the perfect little template and starting point for taking it ten steps further!

This DIY wish bracelet craft is simple to make, while the beads give it a more sophisticated look. It makes a great gift, perhaps as a variation on the idea of friendship bracelets, or to celebrate a birthday or occasion from the heart. It’s unisex and a fun summer craft for boys too!

The hemp with beads used here has a natural, earthy look that brings macrame to mind. But you can also experiment with colorful hemp and different types of string or cord and any type of bead that will fit on them for an endless variety of looks.

I would love to make one using different colored pony beads for a bright, colorful design. Or try metallic beads with a finer string for a more elegant look.

This DIY wish bracelet has a story! Legend has it that if you make a wish when you put on the bracelet, then the wish will be granted when the hemp cord wears out and the beads fall off. Maybe they didn’t make the cord that strong when that legend started? I wouldn’t wish for anything too urgent as this could take a while, but hey, you never know.

What you’ll need

  • Hemp cord (we used #20 size)
  • Scissors
  • 7 beads (we used large seed beads, but anything that fits on your cord will do nicely)

How to Make a DIY Wish Bracelet

1. Cut 3 pieces of the cord to about 15” each.

2. Gather the ends of the 3 cords and knot them together, leaving about 2-3 inches of cord at the end.

3. Braid the 3 cords together for about 2 ½  inches.

4. String a bead onto the cord on the right side.

5. Bring the string on the right side over the middle cord.

6. Bring the left cord over, under the bead.

7. Repeat these steps until all seven beads have been added.

8. Continue braiding for another 2.5 inches, then knot the end firmly.

9. Tie the ends together to form a bracelet.
