This week I had the pleasure of attending Giorgio Armani’s celebration for their new shop in Bergdorf Goodman! The evening was full of glamour, and what is more glam then a classic red lip? Although a red lip may seem like an easy go-to to heighten any look, it can be intimidating because the application and wear can get messy. Thankfully over the years I have mastered the perfect red lip and am excited to share my process with you!
Achieving the perfect red lip involves a few steps to ensure a crisp, long-lasting, and flawless finish. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
- Prep Your Lips:
- Exfoliate your lips: Use a lip scrub or a homemade sugar scrub to remove any dry skin. Gently rub the scrub over your lips and rinse with water.
- Moisturize:
- Apply a lip balm or lip conditioner to hydrate your lips. Allow it to absorb for a few minutes, and then blot away any excess to ensure your lips are smooth but not overly greasy.
- Prime Your Lips (Optional):
- Consider using a lip primer or a bit of foundation to create an even canvas and help the lipstick adhere better.
- Use a Lip Liner:
- Choose a lip liner in a shade that closely matches your red lipstick. Start by outlining your lips, following your natural lip shape. You can slightly overline your lips if you want to create the illusion of fuller lips. Ensure the liner is even and neat.
- Apply Lipstick:
- Choose a red lipstick that complements your skin tone. To apply the lipstick, you can use a lip brush for precision or apply it directly from the tube. Start in the center of your lips and work your way out to the edges. Make sure to fill in the lined area completely.
- Blot and Reapply:
- After the first layer of lipstick, blot your lips gently with a tissue to remove any excess product. This helps set the color and prevents it from smudging. Apply a second coat for a more vibrant finish.
- Define the Edges:
- To create a crisp and defined edge, use a lip brush or a cotton swab dipped in concealer or foundation to clean up any smudges or uneven lines around the lip.
- Set with Translucent Powder (Optional):
- For longer-lasting wear, you can lightly dust your lips with translucent setting powder or use a tissue to blot them. This will help set the lipstick and reduce transfer.
- Add Gloss or Highlight (Optional):
- If you want a glossy finish, apply a clear lip gloss to the center of your lips. Alternatively, you can add a touch of highlighter to your cupid’s bow to make your lips appear fuller and more defined.
- Check for Symmetry:
- Examine your lips in the mirror to ensure they are symmetrical and the color is evenly distributed.
- Keep It in Place:
- To prevent smudging, carry a small tube of your red lipstick for touch-ups during the day or evening.
Achieving the perfect red lip may take a bit of practice, so don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t come out perfectly on your first try. Experiment with different red shades to find the one that suits your skin tone best, and adjust the intensity of the lip liner to create the desired effect. With time and practice, you’ll master the art of the perfect red lip!
